Program Overview

Enriching Rice Through Information Technology (ERIT)

Program Overview The Information Revolution is transforming society—creating new careers, new industries, new academic disciplines, and the need for new research and education programs. Availability of digitized information coupled with affordable access to large and powerful computing systems and high-speed communication infrastructure is changing and will continue to change our society at large. We should consider the Information Revolution as an opportunity, not a threat to humanity. The opportunity is indeed for Rice to become a leading institution on a much broader scale in the Information Age.

For Rice to assume leadership it is imperative to take bold, coordinated steps to enhance the university’s position in computing and information technology. We encourage faculty from all schools across campus (engineering, science, humanities, social sciences, architecture, business, and music) to participate in shaping and enriching the fabric of computing and information technology at Rice. The Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology seed funding program Enriching Rice through Information Technology (ERIT) aims to be a catalyst in this process. This program aims to incubate new faculty direct research, research collaborations, and education activities across campus as well as advance the foundation that fuels the Information Revolution.

We encourage proposals that demonstrate new channels for cross-disciplinary activity related to information technology. Our ERIT see funding program is aimed to ensure that Rice has a leading role in maximizing of the promise of information technology for the good of humanity.

Grants for the ERIT program come from the Sheafor/Lindsay Innovation Fund, established in 2001 with a gift from Rice alumni Steve Sheafor ’72 and Cindy Lindsay ’73.
